With deep regret and sorrow, the Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan notes that the Taliban group has increasingly imposed unprecedented restrictions on the religious and spiritual ceremonies of various groups in Afghanistan, especially the Muharram and Ashura commemorations of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). This year as well, in multiple regions of the country, inhumane treatment of mourners has taken place, and under baseless pretexts, further limitations have been enforced on these ceremonies.
According to credible reports from the public and national media outlets across the country, disrespectful and insulting behavior toward Ashura rituals and practices has occurred. Unfortunately, there has never been any institution or individual held accountable for these anti-human and unethical actions.
The Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan, while honoring the days of mourning for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the noble grandson of the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), extends its condolences to all mourners and followers of the path of Imam Hussain.
At the same time, the Council strongly condemns the Taliban’s offensive and oppressive treatment of the mourners and the Ashura ceremonies, and expresses hope that the people of Afghanistan will be able to commemorate Ashura with peace, dignity, and resolve—keeping alive the legacy of Hussain ibn Ali’s struggle for freedom and justice.
